Library Basics: Request Materials from Other Libraries

A quick overview of the Library: The physical space, off-campus resources, research tips, and more

Access Books and Articles from Other Libraries

Interlibrary loan (ILL) and CLICS allow the John Jay community to request items from other libraries. Requesting these items requires additional time, so ILL and CLICS should not be used when immediate access is needed.

What is CLICS?

CLICS stands for CUNY Libraries Inter-Campus Services. If a book is not available at the John Jay Library, but is available from another CUNY Library, use CLICS.

CLICS can only be used to request books. It may not be used for articles or other non-book items. Books from non-CUNY libraries cannot be requested using CLICS.

Use CLICS

How it works:
  1. Search for the item in OneSearch. If it's not owned by or checked out from John Jay, select the "John Jay + CUNY Libraries" option.

Select "John Jay + CUNY Libraries"

  1. Select the book by clicking on the title.

  2. If you haven't signed in yet, click on the yellow banner and enter your CUNY login information.

Sign in to place CLICS request.

  1. Under "How to get it," click "Request a physical copy from CUNY or SUNY."

Request a physical copy from CUNY Or SUNY

  1. You will be prompted to select a pickup location and additional details (specific volumes, etc.), choose whether or not you'd like to "Look beyond CUNY."

    • If the book is being delivered from another CUNY library, you can select any campus for pick up.

    • If the book is being delivered from SUNY, you can only pick up the title from the John Jay Library.

  1. Click "Send Request."

  2. You will receive an email when your book is available for pick-up at the Circulation Desk. If your request is not able to be fulfilled through any CUNY or SUNY libraries, you will be notified by email. Check the status of your requests by logging into your OneSearch account.

What is Interlibrary loan (ILL)?

John Jay faculty, staff and graduate students can use our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service to request items such as books, articles, and other materials that are not available via the John Jay College Library, and that cannot be requested through the CUNY Libraries Inter-Campus Book Delivery Service (CLICS). John Jay undergraduate students can request articles and scans of items that are not available through the John Jay College Library. ILL is for academic research purposes.

Submit an ILL Request
