Library Basics: Technology at the Library

A quick overview of the Library: The physical space, off-campus resources, research tips, and more

Library Technology Overview

  • The Library provides access to more than 100 computers, both Mac and PC, which can be found on the lower and upper levels. Most computers are equipped with a variety of software options, including Microsoft Office, SPSS, and Adobe Creative Suite. 
  • There are a variety of Wi-Fi options:
    • John Jay Student:  Enter your login information when prompted. The login is the same as for John Jay email.
    • John Jay Faculty and Staff: Enter your login information when prompted. The login is the same as for John Jay email.
    • Eduroam: Free, secure Wi-Fi access available to CUNY students, faculty and staff, and guests from other participating institutions.
  • Computer lab assistants are available to provide help during operating hours. During peak times, the lower level's Reserve Room Lab/Computer Lab has extended hours. Please check the Library schedule before you visit. 
  • There are many other locations within John Jay that offer computer access.
  • Classroom Lab Support Services offers short-term and long-term laptop loans.
  • All Library computers connect to printersWireless printing is also available.

Printer Locations:
  • In the Library: Printers are located in the Reserve Room/Computer Lab on the lower level and near the computers on the upper level. An Anytime Printing station is located at the Library's entrance. Students can use a nearby computer to retrieve a document and print it out even when the Library is closed. There is a color printer on the upper level. 
  • Outside of the Library: John Jay College provides students with several other computer labs and at EZprint mobile stations.

Scan

  • Scanners are available near the Reserve Desk on the Library's lower level and in the Law Reference section on the upper level.
  • Scanned files can be saved to a USB drive, Google Drive, or Dropbox. Additionally, files can be emailed or printed.
  • Please note that students may use the scanners for limited periods when the Library is busy.
  • Scanning is free.
  • Individuals should not scan or copy an entire book, as this constitutes a copyright infringement. For more information on copyright compliance, please refer to the CUNY Office of Library Services page on Fair Use and Copyright.
  • OCR (Optical Character Recognition): To make your scanned PDFs full-text searchable, use the Accessibility computer located near the scanners on the upper level. Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat and select "Enhance PDF > Recognize Text > In this file."

Assistive Technology

The Library offers three designated ADA-compliant computers, which are situated on height-adjustable desks and equipped with large-print, high-contrast keyboards. Patrons who require these computers for accessibility purposes have priority. If you encounter any difficulties accessing these computers, please ask a library staff member for assistance. When the library is closed, contact the Office of Accessibility Services for information about other accessible computer resources, training, and login details.

Locations: One computer is located near the Reserve Desk on the lower level, while the other two are located on the upper level near the Reference Desk. All three ADA computer workstations are connected to high resolution scanners.

Software: These computers come equipped with accessibility software.
