Get Help from a Reference Librarian

When you do research for your classes, you shouldn't hesitate to ask a reference librarian for assistance. Determining which resources you should choose, knowing how to search them, and being able to incorporate the newly found information into your paper are skills you will need to learn. Becoming a savvy researcher may take a while. In the meantime, you can count on the reference librarians to guide you through the research process.

Feel free to stop by the reference desk on the 2nd floor of the library and talk in person to the librarian on duty.

You can also reach a reference librarian by phone at (212) 237 8246.

If you text your query to (646) 256 5199, a librarian will follow up right away.

In addition, you can ask a question by email.

Library locations

When searching the catalog CUNY+, in addition to the call number, note where the book is located in the library.

Stacks: the main circulating collection of the library. On the north side of the library: call numbers A–H are on the upper level; call numbers I–Z are on the lower level. Stacks books can be borrowed for 3 weeks.

Reserve: books kept behind the Reserve Desk on the lower floor. Most can be used only within the library. More info »

Reference: upper level of the library, towards 11th avenue. Not circulating (can't borrow outside of the library).

Law Reference: upper level of the library, towards 58th street. Not circulating.

Special Collections: upper level of the library. Ask at the Reference Desk. Not circulating.

How Do I Connect off Campus?

When you are not physically at John Jay, access the databases by first going to the library homepage, then click on the database links.  You will be prompted for your John Jay email user name and password.

Your user name is the letters preceding the @ sign in your email address. For example the email address for John Smith is john.smith@jjay.cuny.edu Enter john.smith in the user name box. Until you change your email password, the default one is the letters jj + the last 4 digits of your social security number i.e. jj1234.
