ART 101: Faculty Resources: Unit 6 Discussion

Unit 6 Discussion

6.1 Appreciating Modern Art

Modern and postmodern art is often criticized for alienating its audience – people can’t understand it. Is this true of you? Did you like the art in this chapter more or less than art in previous chapters? In your post, analyze what about the art makes you feel this way, giving specific examples from specific artworks. Then discuss whether you think that art should always be understood and appreciated by most people, or whether you think that there are other goals or purposes for art besides being understood and appreciated by most people.

This is a graded discussion board post. See the associated rubric for grading details (click “View Rubric” in the Forum Grade or Thread Grade section to display the rubric).

6.2 Art and Activism

In this unit, we studied a number of artists who used their art for activism purposes – to express a point of view, protest, publicize an issue, and so on. In your post, discuss whether or not you think that art is an effective strategy for activism. List at least three reasons why and why not. Describe a social justice issue that you are interested in and either 1) find and post an image of a work of art an artist has made concerning this issue, describing why this artwork is an effective piece of activism, or 2) describe an artwork you might make as a reaction to this issue and why you think this artwork might be an effective piece of activism.
