ART 101: Faculty Resources: Unit 4 Discussion

Unit 4 Discussion

4.1   19th Century and Modern “Photojournalism”

In this unit, you learned about Gericault’s painting “The Raft of the Medusa” (http://smarthistory.khanacademy.org/gericaults-raft-of-the-medusa1.html) and how the painter was inspired by a real-life event that he read about in the newspapers. In your post, discuss how images change our perceptions of the news, and how contemporary photojournalism is similar to and different from Gericault’s painting. One way to get started thinking about this issue is to read the New York Times article “Ferguson Images Evoke Civil Rights Era and Changing Visual Perceptions”: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/15/us/ferguson-images-evoke-civil-rights-era-and-changing-visual-perceptions.html.

4.2   Art and Morality

The Pre-Raphaelites are among the last major group of artists to agree that one of the primary purposes of art should be to convey moral messages and lessons to viewers. Today, we usually think of art as beautiful, inspirational, challenging, or many other things – but no longer as moralistic. Do you agree or disagree with this description of contemporary art? Can you think of any exceptions? If you cannot, do you think that contemporary art should convey moral messages? Why or why not?
