A German trench captured by British soldiers of A Company 11th Battalion - The Cheshire Regiment at Ovillers-la Boisselle July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. (#Q3990 Collection #1900-13 Imperial War Museums)
Welcome to the Lloyd Sealy Library subject guide on both World Wars. The first world war, originally called the "the Great War" broke out at the end of 1914. It was expected to be over in a short time but instead lasted four very bloody years and devastated an entire continent, leading to the destruction of several empires and the creation of many new states. The second world war broke out in September 1939, twenty years after the end of the first. The world we live in today is a direct result of these two wars. If you are interested in either one or both of them, the library has a variety of resources available for you.
