Health Information

The two resources listed below provide reliable information, including statistics, about specific health conditions, as well as other health and safety topics.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is a government-maintained web site that offers in-depth, yet accessible, information about various health-related topics.

Gale Health Reference Center Academic includes over 2800 journals and magazines, many of which are full text. It contains nursing and allied health journals, other medical journals, newsletters and consumer health magazines.

Biographies

If you need to find out more about the life of a well-known or influential individual, look in these library databases:

Biography Reference Center includes biographical profiles, feature articles, interviews, essays, book reviews, performance reviews, speeches, and obituaries.

Information about NYC

When you do a speech on an issue affecting your local community, you will need to find local information. Look up the following websites for data and statistics about the city's boroughs and neighborhoods.

My Neighborhood Statistics portal on the official New York City web site provides access to statistics related to 311 resident complaints and reports, city services, public safety and legal affairs, and business operations.

New York City Documents, a web site maintained by Columbia University Libraries, is a gateway to resources about New York City's five boroughs. The site provides links to city's agencies, mayor's office, research reports, NYC statistics, etc.

NYCdata is an online compendium of NYC-related data. Hosted by Baruch College, it is a compilation of statistical tables organized by topic.

Selected Statistical Sources

American FactFinder offers access to population, housing, economic, and geographic data from the U.S. Census. It organizes information into categories (people, housing, business and government) and displays Fact Sheets about specific neighborhoods (generated by entering a zip code).

The Statistical Abstract of the United States brings together statistics from the Census Bureau, other Federal agencies, and private organizations.The statistical tables can be browsed by topic.

FedStats compiles local, state, national, and international statistics collected by over 100 agencies. The data can be broswed by topic (A-Z) or by geography.

Bureau of Justice Statistics collects and makes accessible information on crime, criminal offenders, victims of crime, law enforcement, prosecution, courts and sentencing, and the correctional system at the local, state, and federal levels of government.The data and reports are organized by topics.

Newspaper and Magazine Articles

To find articles from newspapers and magazines, search Academic Search Complete (EBSCOHost) .

On the results page, click on either Magazines or Newspapers.

Polls and Public Opinion

Gallup.com conducts US and world polls. It also publishes Research Reports. To view the A-Z list of covered topics or to read a research report, click on the Resources tab.

  Pew Research Center describes itself as "a nonpartisan fact tank."  It collects and organizes information on "issues, attitudes and trends shaping America and the world." Select any of the top tabs (Topic Index, Publication Index, The Databank) to find data on your topic.
